Food Allergy Information for Families

Food allergies graphic

Dear Gardner-Dickinson families,

To help ensure a healthy and safe environment for all our students, we want to let parents know that homemade snacks will no longer be allowed for school parties or as shared snacks. We are sorry for any inconvenience but food allergies impact almost every grade in our school and this precaution will help keep our students safe.

If you would like to send snacks to be shared, please send store bought items that are sealed and have an ingredient label so we can check for possible food allergies. You may still send homemade treats in with your student for lunch as long as they are not shared items. The exception to this would be if a child with a severe allergy has been identified in your child’s classroom.

If your child has a food-related allergy or sensitivity, please make sure to let School Nurse Tricia Gibbs know by calling 518-283-4600 ext. 18. Ms. Gibbs can also answer any questions you may have.

Again, we apologize for any inconvenience but food allergies are a serious and potentially life-threatening medical condition. One in 13 children in the United States has a food allergy. Every three minutes, a food allergy reaction sends someone to the emergency room in this country. Please help us create a positive school environment for our students where they feel safe.

Sincerely,

Dr. Thomas Reardon
Superintendent
