This is a statewide family reading program initiated by the late Senator Donovan and implemented voluntarily by school districts. The program began as a result of concern for children's growing dependency on TV and declining interest in reading for pleasure. The purpose of the program is to develop good reading habits and positive attitude towards reading and learning in daily family reading activities.
It's a great opportunity to spend time reading together as a family beyond the school setting. Curled up on the couch or around the kitchen table it's wonderful to share a book together! Parents as well as grandparents, older brothers and sisters, or the babysitter are all welcome to participate as "reading partners" to ensure all students the opportunity to successfully complete the program.
At Gardner Dickinson, a theme is selected and PARP is held for students in grades K-5. Typically our program begins with special school-wide displays, posters, and information packets with all the details. In recent years an evening "Read-In" with special guest readers has been held. At the conclusion of the program an assembly is held. Certificates and an award will be presented to each student meeting the requirements and returning the completed Reading Record Calendar form on time.
Our goal is to encourage a lifelong love of reading!
PLEASE PLAN TO PARTICIPATE!
"To me what's really important is how a room feels, not where the bed is. Parents don't always understand stuff like this. To them the most important thing about a room is how it looks."
