We are excited to begin One School, One Book this week. Each family will receive its own copy of the book A Boy Called BAT by Elana K. Arnold. Families will be asked to read the story together at home during the next four weeks. There are several options for completing the reading: Your child may read to you, you may read to your child, or you may decide to listen to one of our teachers or staff members reading the book aloud. Each chapter will be read by a different adult at our school and posted to our One School, One Book website.

Our goal is to build a Community of Readers at our school! As you can read in the attached flier from Readtothem.org, reading aloud is a fun, easy way to spend time together that will make your child a better reader and student. Everyone, including students, parents, teachers, and administrators, will be following the same reading schedule.
The “kick off” for this project was held during an exciting school-wide assembly introducing the program and the book. Today, the youngest child in your family has received this letter, a copy of the book, and a reading schedule calendar. We hope that families can follow the schedule carefully so that we can all experience the book as a school community.
Check out the website found at the QR code on the calendar or the link on Parent Square. You will find video read-alouds (recorded by teachers and staff), the reading schedule, trivia questions, and other interesting information! We will also be posting any photos submitted of students and families reading together at home. In school, students will explore the book through activities and discussion. They will be invited to answer daily trivia questions to encourage and reward active participation in the program.
One School, One Book is a great program in which children of all grade levels will be listening to the same book. Research has shown that reading to children beyond their reading level is beneficial. We have selected a title that can be followed, understood, and enjoyed by younger students, while captivating and entertaining older students. We look forward to talking with both you and your child during the next few weeks about the recent events of A Boy Called BAT. With your help, we are building a true Community of Readers.
Sincerely,
The One School, One Book Committee
