District mourns the death of Tommy Mulson

Wynantskill UFSD’s transportation department has relied heavily on Mulson’s Garage for over 50 years now. Mulson’s Garage, located on Main Avenue, stores and services our buses ensuring the safety of our students.

We learned today that Tommy Mulson, who has been instrumental in managing our fleet of buses, passed away yesterday afternoon from a snowmobiling accident.

Our hearts go out to Tommy’s family and friends as he will be sadly missed. Wynantskill UFSD is so very appreciative of the service he provided for our district each and every day.

Wynantskill UFSD students can now choose to attend the Questar III STEM High School on the campus of Hudson Valley Community College. Watch a video featuring Hailey Wagner, one of our recent graduates, to learn more or visit https://www.questar.org/education/ptech-echs/. This small high school provides students with the opportunity to explore the fields of computer information systems, engineering, environmental science and health science. Students can earn up to 63 college credits at no cost while earning their high school diploma. Families interested in this program should contact Amy Murphy as soon as possible.

Positive COVID-19 Cases at Wynantskill UFSD

Dear Families,

The Wynantskill UFSD learned this week of 4 positive Covid-19 cases, including 2 elementary students, 1 middle school student and 1 staff member. Additionally, the school district reported 7 cases last week, including 4 elementary students and 3 middle school students.

Please monitor your child(ren) for any symptoms of COVID-19 and report any absences and positive COVID-19 test results to our school nurse Tricia Gibbs at 518-283-4600.

As a reminder, the school district has moved to a weekly notification email to parents and guardians (rather than sending emails as cases happen). Families of children identified as a close contact at school will continue to receive a phone call from school personnel, consistent with what we have done throughout the pandemic.

Thank you all for your continued support and ongoing efforts to keep Wynantskill UFSD safe and healthy. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Dr. Mary Yodis
Wynantskill UFSD Superintendent

Update on masks, test kits

Today, Governor Hochul announced that, while the indoor mask mandate for business will end tomorrow, masks will still be required in certain settings, including schools.

In early March, the state will make an assessment on mask protocols in schools based on the latest metrics. This includes cases per 100K, percent positivity, hospital admissions, pediatric hospitalizations, vaccinations, and global trends. The state is currently drafting proposed guidelines (if the mask mandate were to end) based on feedback from state education groups.

The Governor also indicated that test kits will be sent to students prior to the winter break. These test kits are to be used as a screening tool to be used prior to returning to school on Monday, February 28.

In order to accommodate our families, Wynantskill UFSD will be sending a bag with 2 kits home per student in their backpacks on Wednesday, February 16th. If you would prefer that we do not send the kits home with your child, please let us know by calling the main office at 518-283-4600.

Thank you,

Letter to NYSDOH about a path forward

I want to thank the Wynantskill UFSD community for their continued support, patience and understanding throughout a very challenging time.

Since the beginning of this pandemic, we have worked to navigate changing state guidance and changing conditions. Earlier today, the District Superintendent of Questar III BOCES sent a letter to Dr. Mary T. Bassett, Commissioner of the New York State Department of Health, on behalf of superintendents in our region. The letter asks for the state’s leadership and partnership in charting a path to help transition the focus of our schools away from COVID distractions and restrictions and back to our core mission of educating students.

Read the full letter here.

Please know that our administrative team, along with our Board of Education, support the development of a pathway back to normalcy with clear direction from the state. We will continue to advocate on behalf of all our students and staff.
