Unexpected Careers Day
Gardner-Dickinson School held its first Unexpected Careers Day for middle school students on Feb. 15 involving a dozen presenters.
“We wanted to introduce our students to careers they may not have thought of or knew existed,” said Superintendent Dr. Thomas Reardon. “I’d like to thank our presenters who did such a fantastic job engaging with our students and talking about the different careers within their businesses and organizations.”
Students learned about law from Martin, Harding & Mazzotti Law Firm, graphic design from artist Christine Arnold, museum curating from the Arts Center of the Capital Region, sports management from the Tri-City ValleyCats, computer gaming from Vicarious Visions, software development from Albany Can Code, clean technology from SUNY Polytechnic Institute, energy from National Grid, architecture from CS Arch, electrical trade from Michael Carey, military service from Henry Kim, and mortuary science from the New York State Funeral Directors Association.
The district would also like to thank Questar III and the Rensselaer County Regional Chamber of Commerce for helping to organize the event.
Literacy Fair – Wednesday, Mar. 20
Gardner-Dickinson School is hosting a Literacy Fair Wednesday, Mar. 20 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
All students are invited to participate by creating a project at home inspired by something they have read or have had read to them.

Student is Principal of the Day
Fifth grader Andrew Denio was Principal of the Day on Feb. 4 as a reward for the school’s Bee Program.
The program encourages students to be kind, safe, respectful and responsible.
Andrew visited classrooms and rewarded peers with good behavior by sharing cupcakes.

SWAG Winners Enjoy Ice Skating (Photos)
Middle School students who won 2nd Quarter SWAG (Success, Willpower, Attitude and Goals) Awards enjoyed an afternoon of ice skating at Hudson Valley Community College on Jan. 25 as a reward. Congratulations!
Students Explore High School Options
Eighth graders learned about their options next year at the annual High School Fair on Jan. 15.
Students asked about graduation requirements, extracurricular activities, AP courses and other questions to representatives from Averill Park, Brittonkill, East Greenbush and Troy school districts as well as Tech Valley High School.
School Counselor Amy Murphy helped prepare students for the event by asking them about their interests and what size school they would be comfortable at next year.
“I advise students that their families should be a part of the conversation,” said Ms. Murphy. “Even if they think they have made their decision about where to go I encourage them to explore all their options to make sure it’s a good fit.”
Grade 6 Student Wins Spelling Bee
Congratulations to 6th grader Penny Comenole who won today’s Gr. 4-8 Spelling Bee!
She will represent Gardner-Dickinson at the Capital Region Spelling Bee on Feb. 11 at Proctors Theatre.
Congratulations as well to all our spellers who qualified for today’s competition by winning grade-level spelling bees.
Author Visits Gardner-Dickinson
Gardner-Dickinson students learned tips about writing and sampled foods from around the world on Jan. 8 as part of an Arts in Education activity.
Children’s Author Alicia Klepeis, who has written 98 books, met with grades 3 and 6 where she told students about her career as a writer and encouraged them to write. She also brought dozens of foods from around the world to try including seaweed from Korea, canned eel from Japan and stroopwafels from Holland.
Ms. Klepeis also met with 7th graders where she worked with them on writing biographies by asking students to interview each other. “Interviews are a great way to practice writing,” Ms. Klepeis explained.
