Understanding Our New Distraction-Free Policy
In response to the New York State cell phone ban within schools, the Wynantskill Union Free School District is implementing a new distraction-free policy. This initiative aims to foster an environment where students can focus on their studies without the interruptions caused by mobile devices. By aligning with state regulations, we are committed to enhancing educational outcomes and ensuring that our students have the best possible learning experience.
Our policy prohibits the use of cell phones during school hours, encouraging students to engage more fully with their educational activities. This change is designed to reduce distractions, promote better classroom engagement, and improve overall academic performance. We believe that by minimizing interruptions, we can create a more conducive learning environment for all students.
FAQs
Find answers to common questions regarding our new policy and how it impacts students and parents.
Why is the distraction-free policy being implemented?
The policy is being implemented to align with the New York State cell phone ban and to create a more focused learning environment by minimizing distractions caused by mobile devices.
What does the policy require?
Students in grades K–8 are prohibited from using internet‑enabled personal devices, including smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, and Bluetooth headphones, from the start of the school day until dismissal (“bell‑to‑bell”) as required by New York State law effective September 3, 2025
How must devices be stored during the day?
Students will place their electronic devices in secure cell phone caddies located either in their homerooms or the main office. We encourage families to keep electronic devices at home if possible.
What are the consequences for using a cell phone during school hours?
For students out of compliance with this policy, the device will be held in the school office until the end of the school day. The first time this happens, the student may retrieve the device, and the parent will be notified. For subsequent instances, the parent must retrieve the device. Further instances will result in the device being held in the school office daily for longer periods of time.
How can students communicate with parents during school hours?
Students can use the school’s office phone to contact parents. Parents are also encouraged to communicate with the school directly if needed, either via the main office or ParentSquare.
Are there any exceptions to the policy?
Exceptions may be made for students with medical needs or other special circumstances, which will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis by school administration.
What happens in the event of an emergency?
All classrooms and offices in our district have phones that can call 911. Anyone can make an emergency call directly. Our staff members are trained to carry out safety and emergency protocols, while students will follow the school’s established emergency procedures. In any emergency, the district will use ParentSquare to keep families informed.
It is important for students to stay attentive and follow staff instructions during emergencies, rather than using their phones to call or text home. Through discussions with law enforcement we have learned that excessive cell phone use during a crisis can overwhelm cell networks and interfere with emergency response efforts.
