Box Tops for Education is phasing out its model of clipping box tops labels and sending them in to school.

Instead, they are moving to a mobile app where families can scan a receipt and participating products are instantly identified, earning money for schools.

Fire Prevention Day

Firefighter with student

The Wynantskill Fire Department helped students stay safe Oct. 9 as they visited Gardner-Dickinson School for the annual Fire Prevention Day.

The morning started with a fire drill, which firefighters complimented students for evacuating the school so quickly. Firefighters then shared safety reminders such as having a home safety plan, the importance of having working smoke alarms, and how to stop, drop and roll.

Thank you for visiting our school and helping keep our students safe!

8th Graders Conduct Stream Research

Students study streamsA hands-on activity in science class challenged 8th graders to make observations and predictions about how water flows through soil.

Teacher Martha Ryan used a stream table in class to engage students and practice science research.

“We are modeling how water formed the Grand Canyon as the Colorado River flowed through the Colorado Plateau,” Ms. Ryan told students.

6th Graders Learn About Motion

Students with air trolley

As part of a hands-on lesson in science, 6th graders tried out air trolleys on Sept. 24 that they built to learn about motion.

Students strung three meters of fishing line as a track and then ran the trolleys along it, using the force of a rubber band powered propeller to move the vehicle.

Food Allergy Information for Families

Food allergies graphic

Dear Gardner-Dickinson families,

To help ensure a healthy and safe environment for all our students, we want to let parents know that homemade snacks will no longer be allowed for school parties or as shared snacks. We are sorry for any inconvenience but food allergies impact almost every grade in our school and this precaution will help keep our students safe.

If you would like to send snacks to be shared, please send store bought items that are sealed and have an ingredient label so we can check for possible food allergies. You may still send homemade treats in with your student for lunch as long as they are not shared items. The exception to this would be if a child with a severe allergy has been identified in your child’s classroom.

If your child has a food-related allergy or sensitivity, please make sure to let School Nurse Tricia Gibbs know by calling 518-283-4600 ext. 18. Ms. Gibbs can also answer any questions you may have.

Again, we apologize for any inconvenience but food allergies are a serious and potentially life-threatening medical condition. One in 13 children in the United States has a food allergy. Every three minutes, a food allergy reaction sends someone to the emergency room in this country. Please help us create a positive school environment for our students where they feel safe.

Sincerely,

Dr. Thomas Reardon
Superintendent

2019-20 district calendar

2019-20 District Calendar

2019-20 district calendar

Wynantskill UFSD families will receive a printed color copy of the 2019-20 calendar this year on the first day of school. A copy will be sent home with students and will be available in the Main Office for those who want to pick one up after the first day of school.

The district decided to have the calendars printed in color after looking into the cost and discovering that the price of color printing has come down in recent years. The calendar has also been reduced from 24 to 20 pages to lower cost of production.

A pdf of the calendar is available here for those who would like one.
